Got up early again today to run before class. I did 4 @31 in slightly chilly conditions, perfect for running.
Yesterday I actually mixed up my schedule and missed a small group session, but I'm pretty sure I can make it up tomorrow morning, which is when I thought I had it.
Today I have three hour long lectures in a row, then later in the afternoon I'm meeting with the Spanish professora to see if I can test out of basic Medical Spanish. It's an elective that I think will be good to take, and If I can skip the basic level, I won't start intermediate until January. |

Yesterday, my first official day of Medical School, was uneventful. A lecture in the morning, with the afternoon off, thanks to having taken Anatomy over the summer. I definitely have large chunks of time free without Anatomy, so again, that was a wise choice.
Today I got up on the early side and did 5 @39, felt pretty good, especially after having taken three days off. Got home and walked the dogs, and now I have until 1:00 to study and prepare for my afternoon lecture. I can see that the amount of material we are expected to absorb is massive, but I think with good time management it should be OK. |

Well, orientation is finally about over. I have one more brief session to attend this morning, then I have the rest of the day to make sure I'm prepared for tomorrow, the first official day of classes! After yesterday's bus tour Hisako and I went down to check out the Everson Art Museum downtown. It's a nice museum, close to home and free. Then I was able to relax on the couch and watch the final few hours of the Olympics.
I didn't run yesterday or today, just feeling lazy I guess, but this was to be a recovery week so no guilt. Since I cant really find a race to focus on I decided that I'm going to my best to make sure I get in 2000 miles this year. At this point that means I have to average about 32 miles per week, which should be doable.
Total for the week: 12 for the year: 1413 |

It's a little tedious, but if you hang in there you can pick up a few nuggets of info. It's just that you're there all day!
Yesterday Mom and Dad were still here, so after another easy 3 on the Erie Canal with Dad, we all went out for a nice healthy breakfast at IHOP. After that, I needed a nap. Then I was at school all afternoon.
Today I got up nice and early again, did 3 a little faster @ 22, then was at school all day, from 8:30 to 3:00. But I arrived home to new floors in the basement! |

Well Mom and Dad arrived safely yesterday and took us out for a nice Japanese dinner.
This morning Dad and I went over to the Erie Canal path for an easy 3 miles, then back home for breakfast. The weather is outstanding up here. Last night we all had pants and sweaters on. It was 48 degrees when I got up this morning. Today is supposed to be beautiful, sunny and in the 70's.
We're going to see what's going on downtown today, check out some museums and maybe have lunch. Then I have my White Coat ceremony this evening, then another nice dinner. |

This morning we woke up to much cooler weather. After hearing some strong storms roll through last night, it isn't even supposed to hit 70 today, and tonight it may get as chilly as 49!
My legs were still feeling a little sore and kind of heavy from Sunday's race. I guess that should be expected from racing a 10K on low weekly mileage. I was thinking about doing an easy run in the hills today but thought better of it and just did a flat 3@ 23ish. |

This morning I won my second ever race! The first was the BA to Celtic Cottage "half marathon" for which I got no award, not even a handshake, and today was almost as bad. I've definitely been spoiled by the Jersey Shore Running Club.
The race was a 10 K, two loops almost entirely on dirt trails in a nature center about a half hour away. There were a few stretches of the course on boardwalk over some swampy areas, and there were some hills too; not a PR course (I think it might have been long anyway.)
I went out relaxed, hanging in 3rd place for maybe the first mile or so, there were no mile markers. After maybe 10 minutes I moved up to 2nd, just off the leader's should and sat for a few minutes. By roughly two miles I was in the lead with the second place guy hanging right on my tail. I felt like I was cruising and when we went through 5K @ 20ish, I started to push. I wanted to drop that guy. By about five minutes into the second loop I was alone with maybe a 10 second lead. I could just barely hear the guy behind me. So I started to push harder opening up enough of a gap that I couldn't see who was behind me anymore. I was lapping a lot of people and with about a mile or so to go I just poured it all out and finished in 39:10, almost 90 seconds off my PR at Brielle last year; that's why I think it was long, I was in shape to get close to 37 today, and despite the hills I don't think I was running 6:18 pace (that's 20 seconds/mile slower than what I had in mind for today?) But hey, a win is a win, even though there was no finish line tape to break.
The best part though came after waiting around for the awards. It turns out that this race only has age group awards, so me, and the person who won the 5K got the same crappy medal that every other person who won their age group. I hate to complain, but come on, they didn't even mention that we won our respective races, just that I was first in the 30 - 39 age group, but I guess thats what you get for 15$.
Now this week I'll rest up bit and pick a new goal race, maybe something in December. For the rest of today, I'm just going to sit my butt on the couch and watch the Olympics.

Got up early again for an easy 3 this morning. Felt pretty good, had a little stiff neck though. Tomorrow should be interesting. After last weekend, I feel like I'm in decent shape, but the 5K and the 10K are two very different races. Either way, I'm shooting for a PR and even pacing. Hopefully the course is flat. The women's marathon is on tonight so that should get me sufficiently fired up.
We finished the fence yesterday, finally. Now we can let the dogs out without having to worry about them running away, although I'll still keep my eye on Nugget, he's an escape artist. |

| I took the day off yesterday and ran today instead. I got up nice and early, @6am, and did 5 with some race pace strides thrown in. I felt really good this morning, but I think its always easy to run during the Olympics. If you need more inspiration than watching the games, you might not need to be inspired, you might need medication. Getting up early is part of an experiment I am testing on myself; to become an early riser, I am training myself to hit the deck when my alarm goes off. We'll see how it goes, this morning's run took just about 38 minutes. |

| Did another easy 3 miler this morning. Tomorrow will be the last hard workout before Sunday's race. Now I'm off to finish the fence. |
