There's definitely a reason for the hard day - easy day routine.  After yesterday I couldn't have run hard today even if I wanted to.  My legs were sore, not too bad, but they just felt heavy and tired.  10 miles @ 1:21 was a lot more effort than it normally is.  The book that has been guiding my training said to expect to feel worse before feeling stronger when starting hills, so patience.
