Good hard run.

Today was the first day of what will hopefully be my highest mileage week of the year. I wanted to run where I could do 9 miles without having to turn lots of corners. So Hisako and I drove up to the Point side of the Manasquan Inlet. From there, I just ran 4.5 miles south, which took me well into Bayhead. Great place to run as the sun was going down. The Point boardwalk is deserted at this time of year, and Bayhead is equally dead. Nice and quiet the whole way. Very few cars to deal with, mostly I just listened to the ocean.
This was my only hard run of the week, and the plan was to do a progression run "Kenyan" style. I've read in various magazines and books that a lot of the Kenyan runners typically do long runs that start out as a very slow jog, and gradually get faster until the last mile is near race pace.
So I did just that, mile splits were 8:29, 8:40, 7:36, 7:24, 6:54, 6:46, 6:36, 6:33, 6:25. I felt pretty sluggish at the start and was kind of thinking maybe this would just be an easy run, but by the 5th mile I was feeling good. The last 3 were definitely an effort, but still well above "racing." Total time for 9 was 1:05:30. Tired now, I'm sure I'll sleep like a log tonight.
