This afternoon was beautiful for a run on the boardwalk, a little windy, but mostly from the west so not really an issue. Earlier in the week I noticed some potential warning signs of the beginning of over-training. After Wednesday's hard workout, I was sleepless that night. Then Thursday's recovery run just felt like crap, and was followed by another crappy nights sleep. I've always found it strange that hard training can leave you so exhausted, but if you push it too hard, you'll be exhausted and unable to sleep, then, if he keep pushing, you're screwed. Fortunately I've been through this before so I caught it plenty early. I paid special attention to what I was eating, only good stuff, no junk, took Friday off to rest, and now today, after a really good nights sleep, I felt back to 100%.
So I decided to do today's run as a medium effort progression run, with special focus on a good strong finish. First 5 were easy @ 40, next 5 a little faster @ 38, then the last 5 miles were each progressively faster, 7:19, 7:10, 7:00, 6:53, 6:48. It was tough getting that last mile to be the fastest because the last half mile home to Mom and Dad's from the boardwalk is mostly into the wind which was pretty fierce, but I got it done, 16 miles @ 2:01. Due to how I was feeling earlier this week I decided to pass on tomorrow's race. I'll just do an easy recovery run. I have to remember that at this point the main focus is getting the miles in. Without really thinking about it, I ran pretty hard Sunday and Monday, then really hard on Wednesday, no wonder I was shot. But I managed to recognize what was happening and pull back from the edge. Looking forward to sleeping solid again tonight!!
