Spring Lake 5

Well, today was not my day. It seemed at first that the weather was reasonable, but once away from the ocean breeze, it was straight up HOT. After warming up and doing some strides I got right on the starting line. With the tailwind for the first mile, 5:36 felt "easy." I hit the second mile @ 5:51, still feeling OK, next was a 5:59, starting to struggle. The 4th mile I ran mostly solo and totally fell apart 6:16! But I managed to pull it together for a good strong last mile 5:48. Unofficial time was 29:30, well short of what I thought I was capable of. But 20th place is my highest finish ever at Spring Lake, and I'm pretty sure I beat two guys who I've never beaten before, both right at the line! Now it's time to re-tool the training a little. Since I've decided to run a half in Oct. I need to re-establish my base a little wider than it's been. Works out well since I'll be doing mostly easy running while I better adjust to the heat. I'm sure I still have some fast race to come this summer, and I should be able to keep sharp with one good workout per week. 7 miles for the day.
