I can think of a number of reasons why today's workout didn't go as planned.  But when it comes down to it, I think I was still tired from the steady 19 on Sunday and then Lake Tak on Monday.  Whatever the cause, I think I did the right thing by cutting today's workout down a bit.

I was planning on doing a 2 mile warm up, followed by 1 mile of 100fast/100easy, then 4 x 800/400, then repeat and cool down with another 2 miles.  I got through the first half of the workout felling OK.  I did the 800's @ 2:43.  But when I rolled into the second set I just felt out of gas.  I got through 400 on pace, then stopped.  I rarely if ever do this.  Usually I will tough it out.  But since I'm racing on Saturday I didn't want to push it too much.  So I jogged 3 more laps thinking I might recover.  Then I tried again, not willing to let the workout go just yet.  Same thing again, got through 400 on pace and then fizzled out.  At that point I decided to call it a day.  I jogged another 3 laps to make it an even 9 miles @ 61 minutes.  It never feels good when you can't finish a workout, but better to cut your losses and be ready to race.  But since Saturday is just a 5k I may still try to get in a few more miles later today to make up what I missed by not completing this morning's run.  The Jersey Shore Half is still 8 weeks away, so I want to keep getting the miles in, but still have a few good race to go this summer.  It's not easy to race well and train hard at the same time.
