First Place Male! but second place overall. Today I got my butt handed to me by a young lady who deserved to win. It was the first time a female has ever won the Brielle 10K.
I stuck to my plan from the gun. You have to control yourself in the first mile, if you don't you'll pay later. I was just about perfect @ 5:59. The girl who would win passed me during the first hill in the first mile. At that point she had moved into 3rd and I was in 4th. By the time we got out onto Riverview she had pulled well away and was closing on the two guys who were in the lead. At that point I was battling a little to hang onto 4th place. I passed the second mile in 6:13. During the 3rd mile the guy who had been in second fell apart and I passed him to move into 3rd place, but that other guy was still on my tail. Right after passing the 3rd mile in 5:53, I saw the leader on the side of the road, he had dropped out with a hamstring issue. So now the girl is in first and I'm in second, still being tailed closely. The 5th mile is your chance to get back some time, but I didn't run it as fast as I had hoped, had to settle for 6:00. Making the final turn onto Rankin, getting ready for that last hill, I could still hear that guy behind me. So there would be no letting up, I had to keep pushing, the leader was now out of sight. After cresting the hill and starting the final descent, someone I knew said I was looking good and was all alone? So I stole a glance behind me and to my surprise, there was nobody in sight! I had a strong finish, last mile was 6:10, and last .2 in 1:04. Final time was 37:31, a full minute slower than the woman who won. Not my best time, but definitely my best finish! With warmup and cool down it was 8 for the day. Humidity certainly played a factor today, and maybe I would have run faster in cooler, dryer conditions, but I'm very happy with how things turned out.
